Get inspired, interview with Illustrator Jon Burgerman
05/08/2010
Get inspired! Here is an interview with illustrator Jon Burgerman, an artist that we collaborated on both decks of our gorgeous illustrated playing card decks...
Jon Burgerman is a hugely successful UK based illustrator famed for his doodling, animation and character design. His style has become a brand in itself, selling a wide range of apparel and merchandise from wrapping paper to laptop covers. The artist has collaborated on a multitude of diverse projects including work on gaming sensation LittleBigPlanet, work with Sony and the Science museum, as well as being involved in both decks of Lascivious illustrated playing cards.
CHLOE: Hello lovely, thanks for taking the time to talk to us :)
JON: Hello! It's ok, I'm always happy to take some time out of my busy schedule for people on a mission to get more women into saucy underoos. Actually, in many ways we shouldn't get on so well, as it's my ambition to coax them out of their underoos. You however seem to be very successful at your quest whereas I'm a complete disaster at mine.
C: It was such a pleasure working with you on both decks of our playing cards, what attracted you to the project?
J: Beyond the excuse to pour over your website it was just a fun little project to be involved in. You attracted a lot of great artists and illustrators to be part of it so I was pretty proud to be involved.
C: You have been successfully established for a long time now, how did you start out in illustration?
J: I sort of fell into it. I graduated from University with a first class degree in Fine Art which meant zero job prospects once I left. This was ok actually as I didn't really want to get a job. Shortly after leaving however a friend recommend to a local musician that I might be worth asking to paint something for his LP cover. I'd never really done anything like that before but just said yes as it sounded like fun. The cover was for Charles Webster and within a few weeks the album was in record shops (remember those) and being reviewed in the mainstream music press. That's sort of how I got into being commissioned for work. Very slowly, say over a good few years, more and more work trickled in, one thing leading from another, and that's how it all began.
C: Your style is now so recognisable that you have successfully turned it into a brand itself. I know that for a lot of artists the client can be a frustrating entity - do you think your focus on your own illustrated product is motivated by a desire not to be told what to do?
J: Does anyone really like being told what to do ? Well, most artists I know don't like it. I think the motivation to make my own products was a couple of things. One was to have complete control over what I made and how it came out. The other was to have the lions share of the profits. When you make products with other brands the general rules of licensing means you only get a very small percentage of the money generated. Of course the company you might be working with is taking all the up front risk so that makes sense but as my friend Jimerthy says to me all the time 'No Risk No Fun'. So in an effort to have more fun I've taken more risks.
C: There is a child like quality to your work that always makes me smile. I love, love, love your colour in wallpaper (subtle hint). You seem to do a lot of doodling on walls - was this a concerted effort to encourage others to do the same?
J: People often email or say to be they have been inspired by my doodling on walls. And yes, the colour in wallpaper has been really popular (perhaps we can do a trade?). So I think there's something larger than life, something that is more powerful and immediate with murals than seeing work printed on the page. Maybe when people see the work on walls they can see more easily how it's been made and how easy it can be to create something. Some people (not all people) forget how fun it is to make something - make anything, from a drawing, a plasterine figure, to even a sandwich or cake. Making things feels good and that good feeling can be infectious.
C: Your approach seems to work for both adults and children. Another part of this cross over seems to be the boom in art toys, for example your 'Hurley Magic Vomit Mouth.' I just recently visited the Kidrobot store in NYC, I notice that you did a signing there recently, why do you think these toys are so popular?
J: The 3d manifestation of the characters into something physical, tactile and manipulatable goes some way to bridge the disconnect between the artists world to their audiences world. It's a bit like an alien visitor coming to say hello to Earthlings. People like them for that reason. We all want and need to communicate and interact, to connect to something or someone we like and feel affiliated with. Perhaps the toys and trinkets offer people that chance to do that with their favourite characters artists work.
C: Where can people see more of your work and what have you got coming up?
J: Always check my site www.jonburgerman.com for news on my events and exhibitions. Coming up my band Anxieteam (www.anxieteam.com) has our first single coming out! To celebrate we're playing two shows in the UK (London on the 27th of Sept and Nottingham on the 28th) and then a series of dates across Germany. We'll probably play some shows in New York too at the end of the year. Our gigs often feature, alongside the fun music, live drawing, animations, games, audience participation and cardboard masks. They're hopefully really enjoy and a bit different to the standard fare so please come along!Exhibition wise my next solo show is at Milk Gallery in Istanbul on September 2nd and I'm doing a talk at a design festival in The Hague on September 9th.
